But only specific kinds of Vorbis and Opus files! Here is an example of a Vorbis file that doesn't work that I found. And here is an example of a Opus file that doesn't work.

By "not working" I mean that Strawberry can't do EBU R128 analysis on these files, since the Track Information - Summary page is reporting EBU R128 values as "Unknown". This is after I've rescanned them and the whole collection a bunch of times.

Formats like MPEG and FLAC works flawlessly, though. Analysis comes through, playback is adjusted. It's great! But for reason, certain Vorbis and Opus files are just not having it. It seems I'm not alone in this 'cause another person also reported this as a bug on GitHub a while ago. Unfortunately, they didn't provide more info so the problem still persists.

A small note, although both Vorbis and Opus suffer, for whatever reason, it seems Vorbis is suffering less with most files working while Opus is suffering more. These non-working files can be forced to work by "transcoding" them into their own format using the built-in transcoder or FFmpeg i.e. Vorbis -> Vorbis or Opus -> Opus. So clearly it's really not inherent to the Vorbis/Opus format. From what I can see comparing the files using opusinfo, I have a sneaking suspicion that the problem comes from GStreamer not playing nice with old versions of Lavf encode for opus.

I'm using the Strawberry version available through the official Debian repo (1.2.10). I also tried the latest version (1.2.19) to see if that helps but no shot. Still same problem.

Anyone else encountered this or got a good idea what could be causing it?

A song needs a track number, independent of the file name. The suggestion of renaming files numerically is a good idea. Organizing your album folders alphabetically, by song name, runs counter to the way albums are presented -- which is numerically, by track number.

Right click on a song and select "Edit track information". There should be a number in the "Track" field at the right. Don't change anything yet, until you figure out the root of your problem, but if there is no number, that might be of concern.

Hope that helps.

I would like to create a new set using .svg icons if possible.

It looks like Strawberry can handle .svg icons for some portions of the application, as I select "Use system theme icons" in the "Appearance" settings -- and my system uses Papirus-Dark, which has .svg icons. The sidebar, however, persists in using the original Strawberry icons.

Using the QT configuration tool (qt6ct), I am able to make my Strawberry look pretty nice in Linux Mint, but it won't do anything with the sidebar, and the stock Strawberry icons look so old and dated. Hence, my plans for a full alternative icon set.

So, would I be wasting my time by creating a .svg icon set? And if I can't use .svg, are there any plans to support .svg fully in the future?

silver-sun

Is there a way to view the track as a waveform?

Following up on this — the moodbar workaround is a fair suggestion, but I think it is worth distinguishing because moodbar and a real waveform actually solve different problems/features. The moodbar shows the spectral "mood" of a track as a colour gradient, which is fine for a vibe, but the colour bands do not reliably correspond to where the loud parts, drops, breaks, or quiet sections are. As a DJ I find myself wanting to see the actual amplitude shape of the track — the peaks and troughs over time — so I can spot a drop, a build-up or a breakdown by eye in a few hundred milliseconds. Mixxx and most DJ-oriented tools display this as a horizontal waveform strip with a playhead, and it is hard to go back to scrubbing without one.

What I would propose for Strawberry is a proper waveform visualization that lives in the analyzer area above the progress bar, alongside Block, Boom, Turbine and the others, as just another option in the right-click "Analyzer" menu. Selecting it would render the loudness contour of the entire current track as a horizontal waveform, with a playhead moving across it as the song plays. It would not replace the moodbar (moodbar can stay exactly where it is, painted into the slider groove), and it would not replace the live spectrum analyzers either.

It would just be one more option in that menu, for the users who want it.

I had a look at the code and the feature seems quite feasible without adding any new dependency. The moodbar pipeline already handles the hardest part: running a GStreamer pre-pass over a track on a worker thread and caching the result. A waveform pipeline would essentially be the same pattern, but storing peak/RMS values instead of FFT-derived colours. Other parts of the engine (Chromaprint, EBU R128 loudness analysis) already extract raw PCM from GStreamer in the exact way a waveform would need.

I am planning to open a GitHub issue to gauge the maintainers' interest. Would anyone else here find this useful? Especially curious whether other DJs, or people working with mixes and live recordings, would back this up.

Hello everyone,

Similar to Darkmaster006, I think the easiest solution would be to have an option to display the collection with selectable columns, just like in the playlist.
That would greatly simplify the sorting process.

Yes, it can also be done using a playlist. However, if, for example, a new folder is added, the playlist needs to be updated again.

That would allow users to quickly select tracks from the collection, for example by genre, to add them to the playlist.

But otherwise, it's a really great program, and I love it.

Currently they are useless, as they point to the filesystem where the files got moved away from.
