If you have never used the product before you need to pay, and if you want new features and bug fixes you also have to pay. Sounds free to me for suuure

You can create a repo on Github and then use Github Actions to create the binaries. From what I can tell its exactly what SMP is doing except they are sending the mac and windows binaries to a private server instead of publicly releasing them. Which is fine, everyone has to get their nut.

Not sure if its appropriate to give more detail then that.

That was released for free and will let you test the software. Then you can decide if that version is good enough and stay there forever like I am on the windows boxes I have or you can decide to pay money for a music app. I backed up this version myself since it works well enough for my needs on the only windows boxes I use.

I 100% understand that maintenance and support has a cost. I have no issues with paying for an audio player that meets my needs. Unfortunately, I see no way to know if Strawberry player will meet my needs. There is no trial that I can find at all. I must pay money to know if the software will work. This is the only item that I have issues with. I have no way of knowing if the software will work. I have to pay money to determine this. What if it does not work after paying?

Just a quick suggestion: perhaps you could consider installing something like VirtualBox (it runs under MS Windows) and creating a Linux VM on which to run Strawberry.

Considering he is releasing versions for Windows, MacOS and Linux all the same, he's investing a lot of time and knowledge to fix bugs, offer new functions, etc. Naturally, there'll be bugs and problems as always. If big enterprises have trouble fixing their software, I imagine a dude programming alone in his PC would have all those same problems too.

I can't entirely blame him for taking this decision. I personally like Strawberry and support him with a small amount of money is the least I can do. That last part is only personal, I've seen people moving on to other options and that's fine too.
