Strawberry not picking up all music
-
Hello. I'm running Manjaro, kernel 5.14.2-1, Ryzen 9 3900x, 32mb ram, Nvidia 1050Ti.
I rip all my CD's to FLAC and copy them to an external 2TB HD formatted to NTFS which in turn feeds a Synology NAS and Sonos.
I really like Strawberry and it's been my default player for a while now. But I have a problem. No matter how often I rescan my collection there are scores of artists/albums not picked up in the Collection list. For example: I scan to artist/album and in my external drive currently it has 61 artists starting with 'A'. Strawberry shows 4. I rescan constantly hoping the lost ones will be found but I think not only am I not gaining I think I'm losing more. Last week there were certainly artists showing that aren't showing now!
I've checked permissions, stray spaces etc and have found no logical reason these aren't showing when others all ripped in exactly the same way are.
Last night I ripped three CD's I had purchased that day. Gillian Welch's new album, an old John Mayall CD and a 50's Rock 'n' Roll compilation. Only the last one is available to play in Strawberry.
To investigate possible solutions I am currently changing my default Strawberry collection folder from the external HD to the NAS just to see what difference that makes. I'll also (having wiped my collection) rescan the external HD again to see if a refresh works any wonders.
I had previously used Media Monkey successfully (on Windows) and am aware that I can run that under Wine but I am reluctant to do so.
Any help or suggestions would be very gratefully received!
Many thanks,
Martin

The most likely reason is that the files are grouped under something else because of the tags.
Did you check under the "Various Artists", did you try search for a specific album or song?
Did you compare the number of files on disk with the number of songs in the database for strawberry?
You can see the number of songs in the context when not playing.
To count audio files:find /mnt/music/ \( -name '*.flac' -o -name '*.mp4' -o -name '*.mp3' \) | wc -l
Another thing you can try is to drag a specific file from a file manager/browser window to the playlist in strawberry to see if it is detected as an audio file and how the tags are read.
You can also run strawberry from the terminal and do a full rescan to see any errors when readin the files. -
Hello jonas and thank you very much for replying.
What tags do you refer to? I'm unaware of including any during ripping.
I will certainly try all your suggestions when the rescan has finished - it's taken over 2 hours so far and still hasn't finished!
It wouldn't be anything to do with album artwork would it? File sizes, image size exceeding your limit etc?
And I take it there isn't a file limit on what Strawberry can handle? I have an extensive collection here (currently over 3200 albums).
Sorry, just my mind rambling with possible other things.
I'll get back once the rescan has finished.
Thanks again,
Martin

Artist, album, title, etc. If the files do not have tags, then they won't be grouped, they will simply be listed under "Unknown".

There are no limits.

Hello jonas.
We may have a clue here!
The NAS files are now showing as my collection and on immediate inspection it's better but not correct - so I start to investigate.
I have an album by a group called A. C. Acoustics and I searched and it was found in 'C'. I thought perhaps the spaces in the title may be the problem so I tried to edit the information but I got an error just saying 'an error has occurred'. Another album this time by Aly Bain was found in 'Various'. This time the 'Collection' boxed appeared to be ticked in the information. I attempted to take out the tick but again got an error.
So it appears that all the albums may be here but seem to be scattered randomly!
I haven't gone through any more just yet - so this is my plan - I'll revert back to the external drive for the 'Collection' and just do a search for any album I can't find. What suggestions do you have about say the Aly Bain album? The clue may be the title of the album which is 'Aly Bain and Friends' and he does play with various guests on the album but the album itself is solely in his name so why does that go in 'Various'?
Thank you again for your patience and help.
Best wishes,
Martin

Hi jonas.
I think we have a result!
It's my not understanding the sorting system I think. I've been searching for the 'missing' albums and for (a small) example 'Alabama Shakes' comes after 'Al Green'. A classical album was filed under the composer's name rather than the performing artist.
Where there is an anomaly I've installed a tag editor and have been adjusting data as I find it to give a more consistent (to me!) feel.
BTW is there an option to prevent Strawberry adding the 'Disc 1' to every album? I've deleted scores of these and I'm still finding them!
Thanks again and good luck with Strawberry - it's a fine product.

Hello jonas.
Back to the problems!
Started Strawberry just now and my 'A' collection is now back down to 15 entries and my artists who are numbers (ie 10cc, 10000 Maniacs etc) have disappeared all together.
I've checked again the tags on some of the missing artists and searched Strawberry but they aren't being found at all.
Annoyingly they were all there last night!
Not sure where I go from here.
Regards,
Martin
