I used the organizing function to move some MP3 files to another folder. All of the ratings vanished 1,000 of tracks. Years of ratings are gone.

I have done this 100s of times using Clementine and never had an issue.

      The files are still there.

To avoid losing ratings when moving or renaming files on disk you need to enable the fingerprinting feature in the collection setting (and re-scan the collection, beware that it is extremely slow to scan), another alternative is to enable writing ratings to files in the collection settings.
Writing ratings to tags is probably what you used if it worked with Clementine.

You are correct. That is why it worked for me before.

          I have a backup that isn't a total loss.

I restored from a backup done on 31 December 2021.

It looks good so far. I only lost around 150 ratings.

One thing I never liked about storing data in the files was how long it took to run a backup every file I listened to was changed and got backed up. So I'm going to do the fingerprinting run a backup and see how that goes.
