I noticed a checkbox labeled "collection" in Strawberry and I'm wondering if this is a database-only variable or it is stored in a field in the audio file metadata. In other words, is this a strawberry-only feature or something that other collection managers and music players might use?
In the past, "Various Artists" has been placed in the "Album Artist" field to denote a collection. Is the collection checkbox meant to replace or augment "Various Artists" or am I misunderstanding what "collection" denotes?

Where exactly do you see this "collection" checkbox?

Select album/collection, edit track information, tags tab, checkbox under genre entry.
Oops, that is "compilation" not "collection". Sorry for the confusion, my question is if compilation is the same as Various Artists and whether this goes beyond Strawberry to other tag editors.

Compilation is a audio tag written to files.
If it is set then the songs will go into Various Artists, but the compilation tag is not the only factor, it can go into Various Artists automatically if more than one artists are detected for a specific album, but it can be manually overridden by the user too.
