There’s a surge of spambots lately on the forum posting about “universities”. Maybe some kind of captcha could keep them out?

      Thanks!!

There already is captcha on registration. It's not just lately, it's actually been much worse before, but I often delete it seconds after they post so often you won't notice them.
I'm not sure what more can be done to stop it.

@jonas Maybe changing the captcha provider/type? I can look into alternatives if you want.

I'm not sure if they are actually spambots bypassing the captcha, or humans manually registering.
            I'm using Google reCAPTCHA.
First you have to click "I'm not a robot", then you have to solve this:

Alternatives are Akismet, Project Honeypot, StopForumSpam and hCaptcha.

@jonas Maybe you could try enbling Honeypot (instead of ReCaptcha, I guess) for registrations, and Akismet for individual posts?

I didn't get Honeypot to work (their website is very slow and I'm receiving 504 Gateway Time-out errors), so I've switched to using hCaptcha instead of Google reCAPTCHA, let's wait and see if that makes any difference.
