This is what happens when the resource is not found (external usb unmounted, oops). Once I remount the external drive, I have to re-add the playlist to get back the tag information in the appropriate columns. Any way to prevent this from happening? thanks.

Never mind I solved the issue. needed to select all the files and rescan
