Under Music, Love option is greyed out and cannot be clicked onto. The keyboard shortcut isn't working either.

I have been giving out rating to my favourite songs instead, but I would prefer the love button, if Strawberry can also shows loved songs.

For the Love button to be clickable the song needs to have at least valid length, artist and song title tags.
Or maybe you accidentally turned off the scrobbler?
The love button is grayed out if the scrobbler is disabled under Settings / Scrobbler / Enable checkbox, it is also possible to toggle this option with the red/grey last.fm icon on the statusbar.

Why would the Love button be dependent on Scrobbler status? Why isn't it a general file tag like rating?

I don't think there is such a thing as a "Love" tag. "Love" is a audio scrobbler / last.fm thing, the setting to turn on the button is under the scrobbler settings for that reason.
When you press the Love button a request is sent to Last.fm or any of the other scrobbler services depending on which is enabled to "Love" the track, the actual data is only saved on scrobbler service itself, not in strawberry's database.

@jonas Ah. Had no idea. I used it a lot in iTunes. I thought it was a standard tag. Thanks!
