to respond to my own post: the solution was to include -o func.getattr=newest in mergerfs mount options so mtime is used. now all changes in the music folder get picked up like it should

Catalognumber as useable tag for sorting, organizing and metadata editor
Hi,
there is a tag called catalognumber that other software uses to set the catalog number of a music release. (e.g. musicbrainz picard)I have many albums multiple times in different versions (e.g. european and japanese version of the same album) and the main metadata attribute that differs between the albums is the catalog number.
It would be neat to use the catalognumber tag in the rules for folder naming when organizing, so that multiple album versions are not thrown in the same folder.
It would be also neat to have it for "extended sorting" for the library search on the left and have the albums separated there too, based on catalog number tag. especially because they sometimes have different cover art. currently only the cover of the first file of the group (I think) is displayed
I sometimes just want to see the other tags a file has in the metadata editor and catalognumber is currently not among them (like a few others but this is not about them). Editing the catalog number in the metadata editor would therefore be neat too, though my main priorities are in the upper two points
I hope those sound reasonable and you could consider this. after switching from foobar2000 two years ago, this is the only thing I still miss
kind regards

RE: New directories are not added
I just wanted to add that I have this on my machine too, using strawberry 1.0.18 compiled from gentoo repository. I believe the reason why this happens is because my music files are on a mergerfs mountpoint and this behaves in some ways similar to your nfs/smb mounts. not sure what exactly is different for those "non block devices", for the moment I do full database rebuilds from time to time when I add new music
