This supposed solution didn't last very long. A few days later, the problem returned, and Pipewire appears to be the culprit.

I installed Ubuntu Mate 22.04 (which has PulseAudio instead of Pipewire) on an external SSD, and then installed Strawberry on the installation, and haven't had any cutting-out problems with it. So, perhaps one solution would be to replace Pipewire with PulseAudio. If you want to experiment, you could install your choice of Linux on a USB3 flash drive. Sandisk's small metal drives (64GB or more) work well, and if they get too hot, point a fan at them.

By adopting Strawberry as my player, and preventing resampling further on down the audio chain, my Zen DAC V2 sounds incredible. After hearing the ZDV2, I can't stand my previous DAC (a Topping D10s), which sounds like a toy compared to the Zen. The key seems to be the TI/Burr-Brown Advanced Segment DAC-chip, which is used in many cheap players, and is explained in a review on Amazon which can be found by going to the ZDV2 page and clicking on the waveform-image at the top of the reviews.

I don't understand why this problem with Pipewire hasn't been fixed - it's been known for years, and some of the best Linux coders designed it and presumably should be able to fix it. It shouldn't be included by default in distros as long as this problem exists. The fact that it is included in some distros seems to indicate that the problem is deliberate, and that there is a solution which is being withheld from the general public.

Ok so for MP3 ID3v2.4 I shouldn't need to do anything given I have those 4 options ticked, i.e.:

Once a track has finished playing in Strawberry
-- if I've rated it in Strawberry, Strawberry should save the rating to the file
-- Strawberry should increment the playcount +1 and save that to the file If I edit a track externally (for reference, I would only be saving other tag fields, never rating nor playcount) Strawberry will re-read the track... so if I listen to a track in Strawberry, rate it, the track ends and the rating and playcount are updated by Strawberry to the track's ID3, then I change the track's comment externally, Strawberry should subsequently re-read the track's info (when it does a full scan?) and see the updated comment, and the rating & playcount should still be correct?

I might need to do some testing on that last one. For some reason it seems I have LOADS of tracks I've definitely played countless times, which have playcount=0, and similarly loads I've played and rated which have blanks for both. In the meantime I've edited various ID3 details for those tracks, but as I understand it, that should never compromise the playcounts and ratings, so it seems something is behaving incorrectly...

@poilu You are obviously paying much closer attention to it than I am. Strawberry is almost always playing in the background, unless I am doing something like watching a video. When I'm deeply immersed in a project, I can lose track of time, and it won't register with me that it has stopped playing for a long time. So, I usually do not know when it stops.

It always stops on a track change and may be connected with the buffering issue, which I mentioned in another post. The continuous buffering also happens on a track change.

I have justed tested recent V7.0 with Win 10. It still takes longeer than 6.0.9 to update DB but all tracks are now present and it now works fine. It seems a bit less responsive than V.609 when selecting pieces and tracks but this is not a real problem. I tried with OpenSuse Leap 15.2 but cannot get it to install with Discover (repo not available) or Yast. Zypper installs it but the previous (V.0.13) version which has the original problem of cutting tracks. Perhaps it is because I have mainly FLACs which average about eight tracks, so the total is very large.

If you have issues with the scan never finishing you can start strawberry from the terminal to get an idea where it's stuck. Similar problem reported on GitHub turned out to be a permission issue: https://github.com/strawberrymusicplayer/strawberry/issues/583

If you are on Linux or macOS can simply open a terminal window, then start strawberry by simply typing strawberry on Linux. On macOS you can type: /Applications/strawberry.app/Contents/MacOS/strawberry
On Windows you have to use the debug version to see the output.
